Indonesia frequently experiences tectonic and volcanic earthquakes because it is traversed by the "Ring of Fire". Volcanic eruption is a natural disaster that needs to be alert. Preventive approach was taken by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM) such as installing the observation instruments at 69 of 127 Indonesia volcanoes to measure seismic. One of active volcanoes in Indonesia is Mount Kelud. Mount Kelud last erupted on February 13, 2014 22.50 WIB.
Research on detection and prediction of volcanic activity is often carried out by volcanology researchers by observing geophysical parameters: seismic, soil deformation, gravity change, crater water temperature, crater watercolor, and groundwater level. However, research on volcanoes related to volcanic activity detection is still lack and generally associated with climate change. Researchers develop and use climate models and satellites to study the impact of volcanic eruptions on climate and detect their activity. Regional climate model, Weather Research Forecasting (WRF), have the potential to be used to detect volcanic eruptions through a change-point detection approach.
This study aims to evaluate and detect point changes in time series data from the WRF-Chem output in Mt. Kelud eruption on February 13, 2014 with the analyzed climate variables, namely soil surface temperature, air temperature, and relative humidity. The method chosen to detect changes in time series data is Noise-Based Change Point (NBCP), while for model evaluation is Pearson correlation coefficient (r) and root mean square error (RMSE). The WRF-Chem requires input data: weather data and volcanic chemistry, namely the Global Forecast System (GFS) and Eruption Source Parameters (ESP). Supporting data such as the MODIS product which is considered as observational data is required to assess the capability of WRF-Chem for the analysis period from 1 December 2013 00.00 UTC to 22 March 2014 23.00 UTC. The use of parameterization scheme in WRF-Chem simulation was selected based on previous study and evaluated with field data that was measured on 31 July 07.00 WIB - 1 August 2019 06.55 WIB.
The WRF-Chem simulation results on July 31, 07.00 WIB - August 1, 06.55 WIB showed that land surface temperature, air temperature, and relative humidity were fit with field measurements (r = 0.94; RMSE = 1.97oC, r = 0.97; RMSE = 0.63oC, r = 0.89; RMSE = 9.44%). When evaluated using MODIS, only the air temperature was suitable (r = 0.99; RMSE = 2.81oC), whereas it was not suitable for land surface temperature and relative humidity. The results of calculations using NBCP and smoothing methods show that an increase in land surface temperature was detected on 22 January 2014 00.00 UTC or 22 days 15 hours before the eruption.
