Abstract: Experiments were conducted to determine nucleic acid sequences of coat protein (CP) cistron and 205 nucleotides part of 3’ untranslated region (3’ UTR) of peanut stripe polyvirus (PStV) genomic RNA, to study genetic variation, and analyse phylogenetic of PStV strains from Indonesia. Sequence data were also compared with sequences of PStV from Thailand, USA, South Africa and with those of viruses within bean common mosaic virus (BCNV) subgroup. The results showed variation within strains of PStV from Indonesia was only 0-2.1% at nucleic acid of the CP cistron, 0-1.4% at amino acid of the CP, and only 0-2.1% at nucleic acid of 3’ UTR, respectively. Phylogenetic trees constructed based on CP cistron data indicated PStV strains from Indonesia, Thailand, and the USA were originated from the same progenitor. However, strains from Indonesia were more related to each other. Similarly, PStV strains from Thailand and the USA were also more related to strains from the same region. Phylogenetic trees using 3’ UTR data for PStV and that for BCNV subgroup showed PStV from Indonesia was closely related to black eye cowpea mosaic virus (BECMV) than to PStV from Thailand, USA, or South Africa. Nucleic acid sequence of the 3’UTR also indicated PStV from Indonesia might be a recombinant virus between progenitors PStV and BECMV.
