Based on Basic Health Survey 2013 prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia among 15 years or older was 6.9%. Unhealthy diets and lack of physical activity have contributed to increase this prevalence. Chromium is one of trace element that takes part in regulating glucose homeostasis and being estimated to enhanceinsulin responsiveness. The aim of this research was to examine physical activity, dietary nutrition requirement levels, and chromium levels associated with fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in normal and type 2 diabetes melitus patients. The study design was cross sectional survey conducted on 42 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and 49 normal patients. The inclusion criterias of the subject were men and women aged 50-65 years with type 2 diabetes, getting menopause for women ≥1 year, and willing to participate in research by signing an informed concent. The results showed that serum Cr levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were lower than normal patients. There were significant correlations between HbA1c and BMI, waist circumference, physical activity, serum chromium levels, and fiber intake. Dietary chromium intake had a significant association with HbA1c. Serum Cr levels had negative correlation with HbA1C levels (r= -0.466, p<0.01).The conclusion of the study was less of Cr levels in blood serum may play a role in development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. | id |
