| Abstract: | ANNA HENNY TALAHATU. Study on Body Mass Index (BMI), Pregnancy Weight Gain and its Association with Infant Growth and Development in Ambon. Supervised by HARDINSYAH and AHMAD SULAEMAN The objective of this study was to analyze pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and pregnancy weight gain and its relationship with birth weight and Apgar score. For this purposes a crossectional study design was applied for 200 giving birth mother from three hospitals and three health centers (Puskesmas) based on certain criteria of 18-35 yr, complete medical records. Data collected include medical record, maternal nutrition knowledge, food habit and socio-economic. The results show that 31% of pre-pregnant women was categorized as underweight. Mean weight gain is 12,6 ± 2,4 kg and weight gain by trimester was 1,9 ± 0.6 kg , 4.2 ± 1.1 kg and 6.5 ± 1.6 kg for the first, second and third trimester respectively. Mean birth weight was 2700 ± 617.9 gr, and mean birth length is 47,5 ± 3,6 cm. About 47.5% of the newborn infants were low birth weight and 20% had low Apgar score. BMI, anemic status, pregnancy distance, morbidity, socioeconomic, and maternal nutrition knowledge had a positive significant association with total weight gain (R2 = 0.489). Based on multiple linear regression analysis, the birth weight was associated with BMI, pregnancy weight gain, gestational age, anemic status, blood pressure,and upper arm circumference (R2 = 0.734); and the Apgar score was associated with pregnancy weight gain, anemic status, blood pressure, pregnancy complication, birth weigth especially low birth weight (R2 = 0.820). |
