Abstract: The diversity of melon types in the markets and the availability of locallyproduced melon seeds are still relatively limited, therefore breeding for new melon varieties is promising. This study aimed to evaluate the horticultural characteristics of several cantaloupe melon genotypes (Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus) and to identify potential genotypes. The experiment was conducted in two cropping seasons, i.e. September to December 2014 in the village of Cibeureum, Mulyaharja, Bogor, and January to March 2015 at the PKHT IPB Tajur II experimental station, Bogor. The study was conducted using a single factor randomized complete block designwith 10 genotypes and three replications in each season. There was considerable diversity among the melon genotypes for all traits except for days to hermaphrodite flowering. Traits with high broad sense heritability are leaf width, fruit diameter, fruit weight, and rind thickness. Genotypes selected from the second season based on fruit weight and sugar content are H94XMRE, R2, and AFAXPAS. Cluster analysis showed that all evaluated genotypes except R5 are grouped together. The selected genotypes have a level of similarity with Eldorado and Emerald Jewel varieties and can be utilized as potential genetic sources in a melon breeding program.
