dc.description.abstract | Snake is one of reptiles that belong to the Ophidia suborder. Information on the number of species of snake and its distribution in Java is lacking so that research needs to be done. Information on number of species and distribution of snakes in Java can be obtained through checking existencing specimens in the museum and also through literature studies (i.e. journals and other publications) about the discovery of snakes on the island of Java. The results showed that snakes in Java consist of 100 species from 15 families and dominated by Colubridae which has 42 species. The highest record of snakes finding is in West Java (78 species). This may be caused by the discrepencies in research effort in Java where the highest research effort was carried out in West Java compared to other provinces in Java The number of snakes are highest low elevation (0-500 m above sea level), which has 60 species and decrease with increasing elevation. | en |
