Perilaku Komodo (Varanus komodoensis) di Taman Margasatwa Ragunan

Abstract

The komodo (Varanus komodoensis) is the world's largest lizard that prone to extinction since they only scattered in some small islands in eastern Indonesia. One preservation effort of the dragons is by breeding them in captivity places, such as Jakarta Ragunan Zoo. Eventhought in the captivity, it does not mean there are no problems faced by the komodo. The main problems are because of differences in the weather and environmental conditions. Therefore, the aim of the research is to conduct behavioral assessments of the komodo preserved in the Ragunan Zoo as the first step to resolve the problems. We used observational method called scan sampling. Observations were conducted in two periods of time, i.e. during the daylight (06.00 am-06.00 pm) and evening (6.00 pm-06.00 am). Observations of the behavior of the komodo included walking, stay still, sun bathing, rubbing body, yawn, drinking, eating, climbing, secreting saliva, craning of the tongue, and running. During the daylight, some of the behaviors were more dominant, i.e. walking, stay still, sun bathing, climbing, secreting saliva, and craning of the tongue. While during the night stay still was dominant.
