Abstract: The increasing number of human activities in using Balikpapan Bay has caused the decrease of space available for Irrawaddy dolphin to conduct their normal life. The purpose of this research was to study the habitat of Irrawaddy dolphins and their distribution. In addition, the aim is also to study the Irrawaddy dolphins habitat preference in the Balikpapan Bay. Survey was carried out at 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 22, and 25 December 2013 in Balikpapan Bay. Three surveyor consistently observed Irrawaddy dolphins directly from the boat. Irrawaddy dolphins are not distributed evenly in Balikpapan Bay but instead, live in selected places. Riko River, MuaraTempadung, Benawa Besar Island, Tanjung Batu, and Pelabuhan ITCI are important habitats for Irrawaddy dolphins. It was also found that most habitats of Irrawaddy dolphins are located at the mouth of the river. Consequently, it is indicated that the location is the most preferred by Irrawaddy dolphins in Balikpapan Bay. Industrial, fishing, and transportation activities have increased the number of ships that cross Balikpapan Bay, and it might be a threat for the life of the Irrawaddy dolphins.
