Abstract: Kas Island is one of the small island in Karimun Regency which became the location of bauxite mining. Mining activities can cause massive damage and it is not impossible to drown the island. The former mining areas has low soil fertility. The objectives of this study were to analyze changes in physical and chemical properties of soil in Kas Island, Karimun Regency, Riau Islands Province before and after become a bauxite mining. This study used data from the laboratory analysis of soil physical and chemical properties obtained from the agency team of Environment, Karimun Regency. Laboratory test data of physical and chemical properties of the soil, descriptively and statistically analyzed using T test at 95% confidence interval. Results of the analysis showed that the mining activities cause a change in the physical properties of the soil that increase the value of the bulk density variable and a decrease in porosity variable, pore drainage, available water and permeability. While on soil chemical properties showed increase at variable pH, Ca, Mg, and K and decreased content of the variable-organic C, total N, P bray, and Na. The results of data analysis showed statistically significant differences in all variables of soil physical properties that analyzed. Soil chemical properties that significantly different are on the variables: organic-C, total N and P bray. Meanwhile the variable of soil chemical properties that not significantly different are : pH, Ca, Mg, K, and Na.
