Abstract: Degradation of oxobiodegradable plastic (OBP) in the environment has been studied by thermal and aerobic degradation tests. Thermal degradation of OBP was studied at 70, 110, and 150 °C and the chemical bonding transformation was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Based on the analysis, OPB could be degraded at temperature above 110 °C. Aerobic degradation was performed based on ASTM D5988-03, by using Martha Tilaar soil media which had C/N ratio of 5. The results have not yet fulfilled the degradation standard requirement. Aerobic degradation rate of OBP was 13.6 mg/24 days and was predicted to be biodegraded completely within ca. 12 months. In the same media, the degradation rate of edible film was faster than the OBP degradation rate. Several factors may affect the degradation rate, including sample raw material, total number of microbes, ash content, moisture content, temperature, and humidity of the environment.
