Abstract: Biomaterials are certain materials that are inserted into the body and used as a medical device that interacts with the body's tissues and fluids. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of implantation of iron based metal biomaterials to blood hematological profile, including the erythrocyte count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit value, leukocyte count and leukocyte differentiation. This study used 40 mice. The mice were divided into 4 groups, the iron wire group (Fe, n = 12), chromium-coated iron wire (Fe-Cr, n = 12), stainless steel surgical wire (316L SS, n = 12) and the control group (n = 4). Mice implanted with metal biomaterials in the hip area subcutaneously and in thigh area intramuscularly. Blood sampling performed on days 0, 1, 4, and 14 after implantation of biomaterials, through the retro-orbital sinus using microhematocrit tube. Implantation of iron based metal biomaterial not caused significant changes to erythrocytes count, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit values lymphocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Leukocyte count, percentage of neutrophils, and percentage of monocytes in all groups of mice were significantly increased on day 1 (p<0.05), but on days 0, 4, and 14 showed the values that are not significantly different (p> 0.05). Generally, the implantation of iron based metal biomaterial not caused significant changes to red blood cell and white blood cell’s profiles.
