Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the habits of eating snacks among the school children at SD 036, SD 070 and SD Muhammadiyah 5 in the town of Pekanbaru. This was a cross sectional study with the subjects of 108 children in Grades 4 and 5(10-12 years). The data on the habit of eating snacks were collected by using a 2x24 hour Food Recall and Food Frequency (FFQ), processed using Nutrisurvey, Microsoft Excel 2007 and analyzed using the Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS) 16.0 for Windows. The Spearman correlation results indicated there was a significant positive relationship between parent’s (mother and father) education and the number of major foods and beverages, while on the food frequency mother’s education had a significant and positive correlation with the main meal snacks and beverages. The Spearman correlation results also showed a significant negative relationship between mother’s education and the habit of eating snacks (number of snack types and frequency) and between father and mother's education and fruit snack habit (number of snack types and frequency). Further, the Spearman correlation results indicated that there was a significant positive relationship between family income and the habit of eating snacks (the number of minor snack types and snack frequency), and on the fruit snacks there was a significant positive correlation between family income and the number of snack types, while on the beverage snacks there was a significant negative correlation between the amount of snack pocket money and the snack habit (number of snack types and frequency). The amount of snack pocket money and the number of major food snack types were positively and significantly related, and on beverage snacks there was also a positive and significant correlation between the amount of snack pocket money and the snack habit (number of snack types and frequency).
