| Abstract: | Nutmeg is a spice plant native of Indonesia that contains essential oils, including myristicin as the main psychoactive compound. In this study, myristicin was fractionated from nutmeg essential oil and analyzed for its potency as slimming aromatherapy with in vivo assay. Nutmeg essential oil was fractionated by using column chromatography resulting fraction 5 (F5) having similar chromatogram pattern to myristicin standard. Nutmeg essential oil, F5, and α- pinene were then analyzed by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer, and the slimming aromatherapy potencies were studied on white adult male Sprague- Dawley rats. Inhalation of nutmeg essential oil, F5, and α-pinene for 30 days showed lower percentage of body weight gain compared with positive control group (high fat and cholesterol feed) although the differences were not significant. Rats treated with nutmeg essential oil and F5 inhalation showed the lowest body weight gain responses, 9.18 and 9.45% (w/w), respectively. However, nutmeg essential oil and F5 were not potential as slimming aromatherapy yet. |
