Powder or scrap from wood processing has been widely used as adsorbent. This research utilized red meranti wood as an adsorbent for phenol waste. Activation process was carried out with combination of physical and chemical methods. The best condition was obtained with 0.75% NaOH and steam flow for 50 minutes. The adsorption capacity was 7.7−23.6 g/g and the adsorption efficiency was 89−92%. The adsorption mechanism followed Freundlich isotherm with linearity of 99.24%. The quality of the activated carbon was fulfiled the requirement in Indonesia National Standard 06-3730-1995 and was better than comercial activated carbon.en
