| Abstract: | One of the problems being faced by Indonesian society is inadequacy of meat supply for consumption per capita. One of the most popular and affordable meat in Indonesia, at large, is chicken meat. However, the chicken meat production and supply up to now is still inadequate to meet the meat requirements of Indonesian people. The main factor that causes inadequate of chicken meat production is on-farm managerial factor. This research aims to study the behavioral characteristics of broiler in the broiler house based on visual orservation. The result of this research is expected to be able to increase the quality of broiler production management. The observations were concentrated on the behavior of broilers due to three parameters: temperature, lighting, and noise. The observed behavior include the behavior of locomotion and rest, grouping, shelter seeking, eat and drink, and panting. Temperature is the most significant parameters affecting the behavior of locomotion and rest, grouping, shelter seeking, eat and drink, and panting in broilers in this research. Based on this research, 60% of broilers are affected by high temperature exposure. Panting was the most observable behavior in high temperature exposure. The next observable behavior was shelter seeking due to high temperature exposure. Light intensity directly affects the behavior of locomotion and rest, and the behavior of eat and drink. The most observable behavior affected by increasing of light intensity was locomotion. The higher the light intensity the higher the quantity of locomotion of broilers. This implies that broilers become more active and has less of rest. Noise lower than 80 dB did not affect significantly the behavior of broilers. |
