Natural resistance of red meranti (Shorea sp.) from natural forest and plantation forest against subterranean termite (Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren)

Abstract

The use of red meranti to supply the needs of human life is not matched by the availability of timber supply from natural forest. Changes in timber supply from natural forest to plantation forest provide changes to the timber produced. Timber produced from plantation forest have the characteristics are fast growing, short rotation, small diameter, has a low mechanical physical properties, and low durability. Therefore, it is necessary to study the differences in the natural resistance of red meranti (Shorea sp.) from natural forests and plantation forest against subterranean termite (Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren).

Penggunaan kayu meranti merah untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidup manusia, tidak diimbangi dengan tersedianya pasokan kayu yang diterima dari hutan alam. Perubahan pasokan kayu dari hutan alam ke hutan tanaman memberikan perubahan terhadap kayu yang dihasilkan. Kayu yang dihasilkan dari hutan tanaman memiliki karakteristik cepat tumbuh (fast growing), rotasi pendek, berdiameter kecil, memiliki sifat fisis mekanis yang rendah dan memiliki keawetan yang rendah. Oleh karena itu, perlu dilakukan penelitian mengenai perbedaan ketahanan alami kayu meranti merah (Shorea sp.) yang berasal dari hutan alam dan hutan tanaman terhadap serangan rayap tanah (Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren).
