Aluminum (Al) toxicity is one the most important limiting factors for upland rice growth and production in acid soils. This study was aimed to determine the phenotypic variation and to select anf F7 rice Recombinant Inbreed Lines (RIL) population derived from a cross between rice var. IR64 and Hawara Bunar for Al tolerance. The experiment consisted of 300 rice lines from the F7 RIL populationand 3 control varieties which were IR64 (Al-sensitive), Hawara Bunar (Al-tolerance), and Danau Gaung (Ai tolerance). The experiment carried was designed using Randomized Complete Block with single factor and 3 replications. The experiment carried out in 3 places, which were the laboratory, the green house and the field. The result showed that based on Relative Root Legth (RRL) as a selection character, the 300 rice lines consist of 130 (43%) Al-sensitive lines. The green house experiment using 50 selected rice lines that were grown in Yellow Red Podzolic acid soil selected 32 lines that were four potential lines that are tolerant to Al and acid soil and cloud be developed as Al-tolerant varieties that adapted to acid soil.en
