Abstract: Artificial propagation is required in particular for fish that difficult to spawn naturally in the captivity. Spawning by hormonal manipulation is one of the techniques that is often done in the hatchery fish. The most common hormone used this technique is Ovaprim (20 μg/mℓ sGnRH-a + 10 mg/mℓ anti-dopamine, AD). Recently, it was also found other materials that can stimulate spawning namely aromatase inhibitor (AI). The addition of AI in hormonal compound is expected to stimulate spawning fish more effectively and efficiently. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of Spawnprim (LHRH-a + anti-dopamine + AI) in stimulating spawning in female comet-fish as a model fish. Spawnprim was designed into four different treatment combinations (A, B, C, and D) using 0- 15μg/mℓ LHRH-a. Ovaprim was used as a positive control whereas physiological solution without any hormone was used as a negative control. Six female of comet fish were injected with each hormonal treatment with a dose of 0.5mℓ/kg body weigth. The results showed that Spawnprim A, B, C and D could stimulate ovulation with the same success rate as the Ovaprim which was 100% in the latent period of 6 hours post-injection, whereas control negative showed no ovulation. Spawnprim C and D did not show a significant difference in ovulation rate with Ovaprim (p>0,05). Spawnprim A, B, C and D give the same results with Ovaprim for egg diameter, fertilization level, hatching level, and survival rate of larvae at the age of 4 days (p>0,05). AI may replace the role of LHRH in stimulating final maturation process of gonads. Spawnprim C and D can be as effective as Ovaprim in the final maturation of the gonads, and yet more economical.
