Analysis of the utilization of online journal ScienceDirect at the Library of IPB

Abstract

The IPB library in 2009 began to subscribe to electronic journals. The base on the IPB Library’s annual report in 2010, ScienceDirect database is a database of the most widely accessed and downloaded by the academic community, especially postgraduate students than the other databases. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that influence the motivation of the use of ScienceDirect Online Journals, their use in writing a thesis, examines the role of the IPB Library and the implications of the use of ScienceDirect Online Journal on electronic journal service. The approach used in this study is a research model that was adapted from the model of user acceptance of electronic journal databases and user oriented evaluation model. This study uses a survey method with questionnaire, quantitative methods and citation analysis. The conclusions obtained from this study are the factors that affect student motivation to use ScienceDirect Online Journal is Ease of Use, User Friendly Interface, Quality of Information and Relevance of Information Content. The factors that most impact are the Ease of Use, while the least is the Relevance of Information Content. The journal title that widely use in the preparation of the thesis are Aquaculture. The IPB role in providing services of ScienceDirect Online Journal covering the allocation of funds, provision of infrastructure, electronic usage guidance, and sustainability of the ScienceDirect Online Journal. The implications of the use of ScienceDirect Online Journal on electronic journal service are the librarian, the user and the collection are capable with electronic content.

Perpustakaan IPB pada tahun 2009 mulai melanggan jurnal elektronik. Basisdata yang dilanggan oleh Perpustakaan IPB adalah : ScienceDirect (Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities), Proquest (Agriculture, Family Health), Business dan EBSCO (Computer Sciences, Applied Sciences). Laporan Tahunan Perpustakaan IPB tahun 2010 memberikan informasi bahwa pengunduhan (downloading) berdasarkan data yang diambil oleh Perpustakaan IPB dari provider, basisdata ScienceDirect merupakan basisdata yang paling banyak diunduh oleh civitas akademika IPB. Sedangkan penelusuran secara online yang dilakukan langsung oleh pemustaka di Perpustakaan IPB menunjukkan bahwa basisdata ScienceDirect merupakan basisdata yang banyak diakses oleh Mahasiswa pascasarjana S2. Berdasarkan data tersebut, nampak bahwa pemanfaatan basisdata ScienceDirect oleh mahasiswa pascasarjana S2 IPB lebih besar dibandingkan basisdata lainnya. Hal ini menarik perhatian untuk dikaji lebih jauh berkaitan dengan bagaimana motivasi mahasiswa pascasarjana S2 IPB dalam memanfaatkan jurnal Online ScienceDirect tersebut. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi motivasi pemanfaatan jurnal Online ScienceDirect, pemanfaatannya pada penulisan tesis, mengkaji peran Perpustakaan IPB dan mengkaji implikasi pemanfaatan jurnal Online ScienceDirect terhadap layanan jurnal elektronik.
