Abstract: Surian leaves (Toona sinensis) contain bioactive compounds, which have been reported as an anticancer agent. However, in vivo study of surian leaves as anticancer has not been carried out. This research was conducted to investigate anticancer activity of surian leaves ethanol extract in rats that had been induced with 7,12-dimetilbenz(α)antrasena (DMBA). Twenty female rats were divided into 5 groups (n=4), namely normal, cancer, doxorubicin, extract I and II groups. Cancer induction was carried out once by injecting DMBA via intravena with a dose of 25 mg/Kg BW. The extract I and II groups were administered orally by surian leaves ethanol extract at 500 mg/Kg BW and 750 mg/Kg BW for 30 days, meanwhile doxorubicin group was administered by doxorubicin once a week for 3 weeks at 2 μg/200 g BW via intravena. Anticancer activity was determined by observing the decrease of tumor volume that was calculated based on number of nodules and cancer diameter. Cancer volume of doxorubicin group decreased by 6.438 cm3. In the mean time, cancer, extract I, and extract II groups consecutively increased by 25.832 cm3, 25.836 cm3 and 23.279 cm3 respectively. This results showed that the extract was not effective in repressing cancer growth.
