Abstract: Oil palm is a crop which requires large amount of water. Optimum amount of rainfall for oil palm is 2000 - 2500 mm/year onaverage, with uniform distribution during the whole year. In Lampung, rainfall distribution is a problem for the oil palm plantation unit, because of the presence of distinct dry season. During dry season, there is significant deficit of water, whereas in rainy season, the excessive water creates surface run off. Water loss trough surface run off occurs rapidly and may create erosion which reduce soil fertility and ability to store water. This phenomenon disturbs crop growth, retards flower and fruit development, and finally reduce oil palm production. This phenomenon creates the need for conservation action as an effort to maximally infiltrate water during rainy season for increasing the storage of soil water which can be used by crop during dry season.
Kelapa sawit merupakan tanaman yang membutuhkan air dalam jumlah banyak. Curah hujan optimum rata-rata 2000 - 2500 mm/tahun dengan distribusi merata sepanjang tahun. Di Lampung, penyebaran hujan menjadi masalah Unit Perkebunan Kelapa Sawit, karena terdapat musim kemarau yang jelas. Pada musim kemarau terjadi defisit air yang nyata, sementara pada musim hujan air berlebih yang menyebabkan aliran permukaan. Kehilangan air melalui aliran permukaan berlangsung dengan cepat dan dapat menimbulkan erosi yang akan menurunkan kesuburan dan kemampuan tanah menyimpan air. Hal ini mengakibatkan terganggunya pertumbuhan tanaman, perkembangan bunga dan buah yang pada akhimya akan menurunkan produksi kelapa sawit. Fenomena tersebut mendorong perlunya tindakan konservasi sebagai upaya meresapkan air di musim hujan secara maksimal sehinggga dapat meningkatkan cadangan air tanah yang dapat digunakan tanaman pada musim kemarau.
