Abstract: The research aims to examine the growth and character of three genotypes of hybrid IPB 9 x IPB 1, IPB 9 x IPB 3, and IPB 3 x IPB 9 genotypes in vegetative phase. This research was conducted at The Experimental Field Station PKBT IPB, Tajur Bogor from March to September 2011. The experiment use a randomized complete block design with six genotypes of papaya treatment. The repetition was done six times, with each unit of the experiment are five representative plants. The observation of plant growth per week was perfomed on plant height and leaf number. The observation of petiole colour, trunk diameter, petiole length, leaf length, leaf width, times of the first flowers appear, and the height position of the first flower was done once at the end of the observation that was in the week when the first flower appear. The results showed that IPB 9 x IPB 1 genotype has higher average in leaf number and trunk diameter and shorter average in height position of the first flower appear than another genotypes hybrid of papaya. Genotype of IPB 9 x IPB 3 has shorter average in plant high and smaller size in leaf which not different with IPB 9 x IPB 1. The hybrid genotypes of papaya which tested have a short score of heterosis and heterobeltiosis generally. Based on the estimation value of heterosis, genotype of IPB 9 x IPB 1 can be an alternative in obtaining hybrid because it has more superior character than two other hybrids, that of them is have higher in leaf number, bigger in trunk diameter and strong trunk, and shorter in height position of the first flower than parents genotypes.
