Abstract: Melengestrol acetate (MGA) is an orally active progestational steroid used to improve weight gain, feed conversion efficiency, promote growth, and suppress oestrus in beef heifers. The use of MGA can leave residue in meat and may caused carcinogenic effects. The objectives of this research were to detect MGA residue in imported meat, and to analyze the presence of the MGA residue in imported meat from Australia and New Zealand. Sample size was calculated using the formula according to Canon and Roe (1982) cited by Martin et al. (1987) and selected by random sampling. All samples were analyzed using enzym linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The test showed that 6 out of 59 samples (10.17%) contained MGA residues in imported meat from Australia, while 2 out of 59 samples (3.39%) contained MGA residues in imported meat from New Zealand. The result showed that MGA mean concentrations in imported meat from Australia and from New Zealand were 0.256 ± 0.018 ppb and 0.315 ± 0.006 ppb. Concentration of MGA in imported meat from Australia and New Zealand did not differ (p>0,05). MGA concentrations in imported meat from Australia and New Zealand were lower than the maximum residue level (MRL) according to the Indonesian National Standard.
