The development of a model for improving human resource quality and family well-being in coastal area, West Java Province.

Abstract

One of the most problems of coastal communities in Indonesia is the high of poverty level and low of human resources quality. The purpose of this research is to develop a model for improving the quality of human resource and family well-being in coastal area. The study involved 280 families randomly selected from four districts of West Java. The results show that the quality of human resources in northern coastal tend to be lower than that of families in southern coastal area. Fisherman families tend to have lower quality of human resources rather than non-fisherman families. According to World Bank and BPS indicators, families in northern coastal area are wealthier than families in southern. Meanwhile, in terms of BKKBN and socio-metric indicators, it shows that families in southern coastal area tend to have higher family well-being than families in northern coastal area. Based on the analysis of structural equation model shows that family well-being in a coastal area can be improved by increasing family income, assets, gender relation in family decision making process, education and health conditions of family’s member, and reducing family size.
