Abstract: Red yeast rice is a fermented product of rice by mold species of Monascus, one of which is Monascus purpureus. For many centuries, red yeast rice had been used as flavor enhancer and food odorant, as well as a traditional medicine for digestive and vascular functions. Some empirical evidence showed that red yeast rice could increase platelet amount in dengue haemorragic fever patients. The experimental data showed that Sprague dawley male white mouse which were made thrombocytopenia with heparin treatment as much as 0.1 mL/100 g of body weight could accelerate their platelet formation rate and did not die because of bleeding with ingestion of Monascus powder capsule with a dose of 90 mg/kg body weight/day.
Angkak merupakan hasil fermentasi beras dengan menggunakan kapang Monascus, salah satunya adalah Monascus purpureus. Telah berabad-abad angkak digunakan sebagai penambah rasa dan pewarna dalam makanan, juga dikenal sebagai obat tradisional untuk penyakit yang berhubungan dengan pencernaan dan dengan pembuluh darah. Secara empiris, angkak terbukti mampu meningkatkan trombosit pada pasien demam berdarah dengue. Data hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hewan uji tikus putih galur Sprague dawley yang dibuat trombositopenia dengan pemberian heparin 0.1 mL/100 g bobot badan mampu meningkat laju pembentukan trombositnya dan tidak mengalami kematian akibat perdarahan dengan pemberian kapsul Monascus powder dengan dosis 90 mg/kg bobot badan/hari.
