| Abstract: | Sulfur in diesel fuel can result in air pollution and damage to vehicle engines. Sulfur in diesel fuel can be decreased by adsorption using activated charcoal prepared from seed skin of wild almond (Sterculia foetida). The a charcoal from the seed was activated by 7 different treatment, namely activation using water vapor for 1 and 2 hours, activation using water vapor for 1 hour followed by impregnation in 5% ZnCl2 solution, impregnation in 5% ZnCl2 solution and followed by water vapor for 1, 2, and 2.5 hours, and impregnation in 5% ZnCl2 solution. The activated charcoal were characterized based on technical quality parameters of activated charcoal as stipulated in the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 06-3730-1995). Surface of activated charcoal also analyzed by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Adsorption of sulfur in diesel fuel was analyzed by using SEM–energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM–EDX). The highest sulfur adsorption was showed by charcoal impregnated in 5% ZnCl2 solution followed by activation by water vapor for 2.5 hours. In this case, 1.503 grams of the activated charcoal adsorbed sulfur of 0.30% (w/w) in 7 hours. Sulfur dalam solar dapat mengakibatkan pencemaran udara dan kerusakan pada mesin kendaraan. Kandungan sulfur dalam solar dapat diturunkan dengan adsorpsi menggunakan arang aktif kulit biji kepuh (Sterculia foetida). Arang dari kulit biji kepuh diaktivasi dengan 7 cara, yaitu arang yang diaktivasi dengan uap air selama 1 dan 2 jam, arang yang diaktivasi dengan uap air selama 1 jam kemudian diimpregnasi dalam larutan ZnCl2 5%, arang yang diimpregnasi dalam larutan ZnCl2 5% kemudian diaktivasi dengan uap air selama 1, 2, dan 2.5 jam, dan arang yang diimpregnasi dalam larutan ZnCl2 5%. Karakterisasi arang aktif yang dipelajari dalam penelitian ini berdasarkan parameter mutu arang aktif teknis yang terdapat pada Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI 06-3730-1995). Permukaan arang aktif juga dianalisis menggunakan mikroskop elektron payaran (SEM). Adsorpsi sulfur dalam solar oleh adsorben dianalisis menggunakan SEM-spektrometer sinar-X dispersif energi (SEM-EDX). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adsorpsi sulfur paling tinggi dilakukan oleh arang yang diimpregnasi dalam larutan ZnCl2 5% kemudian diaktivasi dengan uap air selama 2.5 jam dengan bobot sebesar 1.503 gram dan waktu adsorpsi selama 7 jam mampu menjerap sulfur sebesar 0.30% (b/b).
