Abstract: In Indonesia, the use of special pots to catch lobsters has not been much done and undeveloped, so that the necessary effort to develop a lobster pot fishing gear through technological improvements or modifications of existing gear. There are organisms that originated from the mainland are expected to have economic potential as a natural alternative for lobster bait, ie earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus). The general objective of the research is to make improvements and reveal the effectiveness of pot construction and the use of alternative bait in the lobster resource utilization. The experiment was conducted in two stages carried out since the year 2008 to 2011. The first stage is a laboratory-scale research and the second stage is a field-scale research with the experimental fishing in the eastern coast of the Pelabuhanratu Bay waters of West Java. The result of this study show that catch of collapsible pot consisted of the main target and by-catch. The main target catches were composed by lobster, consisting of three species, namely scalloped spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus), painted rock lobster (Panulirus versicolor), and ornate rock lobster (Panulirus ornatus). On the other hand the by-catch which consisting of a group of crustaceans (sea swimming crabs), group molluscs (cuttlefish-Sepia sp.), groups of fish (grouper, Epinephelus maculatus), and groups of crustaceans (shrimp, Squilla mantis). Fishing trials to measure the effectiveness of collapsible pot modifications and bait of sardines has been performed for 31 days of fishing trip. The use of collapsible pot experiments has a different effectiveness in acquiring lobster catches (Fvalue α = 5% = 9.44> Ftabel = 3.097 or p-value = 0.0002 <0.05). Trials to measure the effectiveness of collapsible pot side doors modification and bait earthworms have been performed for 20 days fishing trip The statisticaly analysis show that two types of collapsible pot and two kind of baits in this research are significantly different (α = 5%). Furthermore analysis comparison about lobster catch between type of collapsible pot show that the standard of collapsible pot is better compared with modifications. While collapsible pot using earthworms better than the collapsible pot that uses sardine (standard of bait). The collapsible pot modification can reduce by-catch by 50% compared with the standard. Earthworms have a high protein content, also have good feedback resistance in sea water compared with bait sardines. Earthworms bait fat content decreased more rapidly with an average reduction of 65.48% ± 3.04 compared with sardines 41.51% ± 3.44.
Penangkapan lobster, secara umum merupakan kegiatan perikanan tangkap skala kecil yang memiliki keterbatasan dalam upaya pemanfaatan sumberdaya perikanan, seperti keterbatasan dalam perolehan input teknologi (IPTEK), sehingga cenderung statis dalam penggunaan teknologi alat tangkap yang digunakan. Di sisi lain, metode penangkapan dari alat tangkap dan cara penangkapan lobster yang digunakan akan memiliki keunggulan dan kekurangan dalam perolehan hasil tangkapan lobster baik dalam jumlah, ukuran dan kualitasnya. Bubu adalah alat tangkap perangkap atau jebakan yang sifatnya pasif. Penggunaan bubu untuk penangkapan lobster sesungguhnya adalah memakai bubu yang umum digunakan untuk menangkap ikan-ikan karang. Bubu ini ukurannya bermacam-macam yang disesuaikan dengan kedalaman air. Bubu dapat dibedakan menjadi dua jenis berdasarkan letak mulut bubu. Jenis yang pertama dengan satu mulut bubu yang terletak pada bagian atas bubu, dan jenis kedua yaitu bubu dengan satu atau dua mulut bubu yang terletak di bagian samping bubu. Umpan merupakan salah satu faktor penting untuk menunjang keberhasilan suatu operasi penangkapan dan berfungsi sebagai perangsang yang memikat target penangkapan dan sangat berpengaruh untuk meningkatkan laju tangkap bubu. Di Indonesia, penggunaan bubu yang khusus untuk menangkap lobster belum banyak dilakukan dan belum berkembang, sehingga diperlukan upaya pengembangan alat tangkap bubu lobster melalui perbaikan teknologi atau modifikasi dari alat tangkap yang ada. Terdapat organisme yang berasal dari wilayah daratan yang diduga memiliki potensi ekonomis sebagai alternatif umpan alami bagi lobster, yaitu cacing tanah (Lumbricus rubellus).
