| dc.description.abstract | The delignification of empty fruit bunches of oil palm (EFB) may be hydrolyzed to major soluble sugars, such as glucose and xylose, which then can serve as feed stocks for a variety of fermentations producing value added products. Azemi et al. (1994) have proven that the hydrolyzate of solid palm waste was a good substrate ior the production of glutamic acid and single cell protein. This study reports the process studies of acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation from empty fruit bunches of palm oil The EFB was delignifiedby NaOH 1 N for two hours, followed by autoclaving at 121 °C for 15 min saccbarification of the holocellulose was carried out in stirred tank bioreactor at 48 JC for 72 h, using citric buffer 0-5 M, 2% of cellulose and 0 4% cellobiase. Fermentation was studied anaerobicallly using three different levels of initial sugar content (40. 60, 80 g/l) and Clostridium acetobutylicum P 262 at 34°C without agitation The best result (14 23 g ABE/I) was obtained on the substrate of 60 g/l, giving yield of 27,2%, based on the sugar being consumed. The maximum specific growth rate of the bacteria was 0.287/h the specific production rate of ABE was 0.263 g ABE/g biomass., and the residual acid content on broth was 13 73 g/l. | en |
