Abstract: | Indonesia has more than 17 million hectares of peatland, but the utilization of that land hasn't optimum yet A lot of peatland reclamation causes their ecosystem damage because of a wrong concepr and its application design. To prevent more serious damage in the future,we research the technique of peatland management. The objective of this research is to evaluate the technique of peatland management by iradttional people, government, and private companies. The results show that Banjarese and Dayak traditional people have succeeded in agricultural peatland development Dayak people manage peatland behind riverhanks (levee) far their agricultural land. Naturally, this area is more fertile than the others because cf the impact of mud from river sedimentation, Banjarese people open the peatland in 3-4 km from the river This area commonly has tide impact from us river. They have experienced for managing water by canal drainage and water gores. Government derelopes peatlands in a large scale which related with transmigration program A long wide and deep drainage canal were built without concened to conserved forest in peat dome, so when peatland reclamation was carried out, it causer many ecosystem damage. Private Company have used successfully the peatland for their estates The estate runs successfully because of a good water management. We conclude that ihe exploitation of peatland for agriculture should concern (he water drainage and irrigation system, the source of fresh water far irrigation, and cooperation with private companies |
