Using 115 districts/cities at Java Island and 9 sectors on the 2001-2008, this study use Esteban’s shift share analysis to investigate the extent to which the existing interregional disparities in labour productivity can be attributed. The different between labour productivity of districts/cities and Java Island average is regressed on the three shift share components: industrial mix, productivity different, and allocative. However, labour productivity is not only influenced by three shift share components as explanatory variables but also by aspects related to surrounding districts/cities (neighborhood). Therefore, this research employed spatial econometric models, i.e. spatial lag model and spatial error model. We observed significant spatial effect for productivity different and the industrial mix component, productivity different as well as allocative components. The result found that labor productivity disparities across districts/cities in Java Island could be attributed to the industry mix, productivity different and allocative components. Whereas the highest coefficient regression value indicated by industrial mix component. Therefore, policies are needed not only for the transformation of labor from one sector (eg. primary sector) to other sectors (eg. secondary sector). It’s necessary to promote policy emphasis on increasing sectoral labour productivity, for example through empowering labor skills and improving of socioeconomic infrastructure.en
