The objective to the experiment was to identify the compatibility of VAM species and soybean to drought. Nine VAM species and were three soybean genotypes tested for their compatibility to two levels of drought. The levels were set up based on field capacity (FC) of soil moisture conditions : 80% FC and 60% FC. The experiment was conducted in plastic house at the experimental field of Meteorological Station, Sampali, Medan, North Sumatera, from March to April 2001. Results showed that at 80% FC VAM species, i.e. Gigaspora margarita, Glomus etunicatum. and Sculellospora calospora were more compatible than the others. At 60% FC, however, G. etunicatum was more compatible than the others. The highest infection rate of 93,33% was attained by Sindoro, the most tolerant soybean genotype. The positive role of VAM to evercome drought stress was more significant in the less tolerant than the more tolerant genotypes.en
