Abstract: Methyl ester sulphonate (MES) is an anionic surfactant madefrom natural resources, such as palm kernel methyl ester and has been widely used in soap and detergent industry. The purposes of this research were to get the besr conditions of sulphonation process in producing MES from palm kernel methyl ester and to get the characteristics of resulted MES The factors analyzed were temperature with three levels (60. 80 and 1000C) and agitation speed (100. 300 nnd 500 rpm). The analysis of the results showed that temperature and agitation speed influence the pH value and the color d MES, decreasing the suiface tension, decreasing the interfacial tension, increasing the emulsion stability and increasing the foam stability. Further more, the interaction of temperature and agitation speed influence the pH value attd the color of MES, decreasing the interfacia! tension, increasing the emulsion stability and increasing thefoam stability. The besr sulphonation process is performed or I Off C of remperarure and 500 rpm of agitation speed it gives 4.70 c£ pH. red-purple color with 57.72 d color lightness, water surface tension reduction of 50.9 %, interfacial tension reduction of 97 2 %. 9.0 minutes of emulsion stability and 14.3 hours d foam stability.
