Abstract: To support the national food security, the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) cooperates with Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) to develop, launch, and operate a micro satellite called LAPAN-IPBSat. To achieve this activity is required early studies especially for the development of technical specifications and algorithms for fisheries and oceanic applications. Technical specifications for the LAPAN-IPBSat Satellite in the early stages use four bands: band 1 (450 to 520 nm (blue)), band 2 (520 to 600 nm (green)), Band 3 (630 to 690 nm (red)), and Band 4 (760 to 900 nm (near infrared)). This satellite is focused on land and coastal applications. For fisheries and oceanic applications, it is expected to develop LAPAN-IPBSat that can detect the three main elements of oceanography (sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a concentration, and the dynamics of sea-level height) at the same time. The satellite is expected to have technical specifications that includes visible light, near infrared, thermal infrared, and radar. In the development of algorithms to estimate sea surface temperatures, it is needed to separate the algorithms for night-time and day-time and increase the algorithms accuracy by reducing errors due to the influence of thin clouds in the atmosphere. To get more accurate algorithms to estimate sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration for Indonesian waters, more in situ data are needed.
