Abstract: "Why should we switch from allowable stress design (ASO) to load and resistance factor design (LRFD) for wood?" This question has been asked by many Wood Engineers before they decide to switch from ASO to LRFO. Otherwise LRFO has been used for some time in countries around the world and is commonly practiced for many different materials such as steel, concrete, and wood. This article will discuss the similarity between two design codes for wood. It discusses some advantages and disadvantages for making the switch. Some cases such as flexure, shear, compression and tension, will be pOinted as examples.
