Abstract: Breeeding for tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress in plant Breeding and Genetics Laboratory, Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture has been established since 1978, through integration laboratory staff research with graduate and undergraduate student research. The research were funded and facilitated by several sources: (a) graduate research funding (affiliated institution of garduate students or Directorate General of Higher Education of National Education Department) (b) Research funds from Directorate of Research and Public Service, Directorate General of Higher Education of National Education Department (c) Food Crops Research Center, Bogor (d) Logistic Affair Agency (BULOG) (e) Field Stations of Bogor Agricultural University (j) BIOTROP, Bogor (g) Benih Prima Tata Sembada, Seed Industry. Research for biotic stresses focused on resistance to bacterial wilt of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), Fusarium wilt of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), blast disease and brown plant hopper of rice (Oryza sativa). Breedingfor tolerance to Aluminum toxicity was performed on rice, soybean and maize. Study on Yellow Red Podzolic soil elucidated the role of additive genes for tolerance to aluminum toxicity on soybean, on upland rice was found wide range of tolerance to aluminum toxicity of susceptible genotYpes to tolerant genotypes. Genetic studies on adaptation of rice to salinity have elaborated major role of additive and non-additive genes. To improve utilization of germplasm and prevention of genetic vulnerability Dialel Selective Matting (DSM) method was applied on breeding tomato for resistance to bacterial wilt as well as soybean and upland rice for tolerance to aluminum toxicity, whereas Comprehensive Breeding System (CBS) method was applied on maze for yiela:improvement.
