Combining ability of agronomic characters in some Virginia flue cured tabacco ( Nicotiana tabacum L.) were studied in a 6 x 6 diallel cross of Virginia flue cured tobacco varieties. General combining ability ( gca ), specific combining ability (sca) and reciprocal combiningability ( rca) were highly significant for plant height, days to flowering, and leaves number. The gca for green leaves and cured leaves production, sugar and nicotine content were highly significant. Only cured leaves production indicated significant sca. The rca for green and cured leaves production were highly significant, while sugar and nicotine content were not. The gca mean square for all characters higher than the other two types combining ability indicated that additive genetic role were greater than non-additive genetic for all characters. Among the six tested varieties, McNair 133 has greatest gca for alldcharacters, McNair 133 x NC 95/MC 11 cross combination anticipated good quallty without reducing its yielding potential. The greater genetic improvement can be gained if this crossing followed by recurrent selection.id
