Abstract: It has been khown that in submerged rice field, harvest can always be produced even without the use of chemically synthesized fertilizer. Microbiological studies in the rice fields indicated that many N,-fixing bacteria, especially photosynthetic bacteria were present in high population. These groups of bacteria were apparently the major contributors for sustaining nitrogen supply in the rice field. In this study, ten anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria isolates from rice field were analysed genetically employing schizotyping. Those isolates were further tested for their ability to support rice growth in culture media lacking fixed nitrogen. The results showed that all of the anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria isolates analyzed were able to grow in Sistrom media without nitrogen. In addition, the leaf color, vigor and dry weight of the plants demonstrated better growth when compared to the negative control plants that were not inoculated with~~noxygenipch otosynthetic bacteria. We also observed that the roots treated with anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria were significantly longer than the ones that were not inoculated with bacteria or only inoculated with E. coli.
