Research was conducted to investigate the anther culturability of F1 upland rice as materials for developing new shading- tolerant upland rice lines. Eight genotypes of F1 upland rice obtained from reciprocal crosses of P1 (Way Rarem and Gajah Mungkur) having good agronomic characteristics but no shade-tolerance and P2 (ITA-247 and Jatiluhur) with high shading-tolerance were evaluated for the anther culturability. The result showed that the highest anther culturability of a selected F1 lines was ITA-247/Way Rarem followed in order by ITA-247/Gajah Mungkur, Gajah Mungkur/Jatiluhur, and Gajah Mungkur/ITA-247. The F1 regenerated plants will be used as materials for producing new shading-tolerant upland rice linesid
