Abstract: This paper presented a particle size effict on model retaining wall comparing the experimental and finite elernent analysis. The experiments were conducted with air-drietl' ir'oq,oura sand and Sonrt~ sand in plane strain condition, both sand are standard sand in Japan. The wall was moved horizontally into sarzd. The heights of sand mass in these experiments were 5 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm The finite element analysis employed a constitutive model in ~uhichI ~OIZ-a:isocia!setrda in harderling-softe1'1inge l~rsto-plusticn zuterial u7ase nlploj,ed This urzalysis ~ntrodzrc.edt he effect of shear bund thic*kness The r.e.sllltr ohtuirlcd from the finite c~lemelitL I I I C ~ ~ J J,SY~~S O I I . ~NI ~g'o od ~zgi-c~~~~~t'ict~hth iel tr esults obttli~zedj1 *o11i[ lie e.~per.rlne~i~rztv~e~,slt igcrtzo~ h'rom both experimental and analyticul results, there was evident of particle size effect due to shear banding.
