The immunolocalization of lactoferrin in the exocrine tissues of the tree shrew was studied at light- and electron-microscopic levels using a polyclonal antibody to lactofenin. Lactofenin was detected in the cytoplasm of serous cells. In the submandibular gland, low to moderate immunoreactivity was observed in the serous acinar cells and ductal epithelium. In the parotid gland, groups of serous acini showed positive reaction. The fundic glands showed moderate to strong positive reaction, while cardiac, pylorie, Intestinal glands and pancreatic acinar cells showed negative reaction. In the secretory epithelium of the active mammary gland, the immunoreactivity varied from moderate to strong. Secretory epithelium of vesicular gland showed weak to moderate immunoreactivity and those of prostate gland showed weak immunoreactivity. The secretory materials of these glands showed weak immunoreactivity. No positive reaction was observed in the bulbourethral gland. Positive reactions were also detected in the neutrophil leukocyte, Paneth cells and urethral epithelium. The intensity of immunoreactivity reflects qualititative amount of Iactoferrin. The mmunoreactivities were weak to moderate, indicated might reflect that the concentration of Iactoferrin was not high in the normal and healthy tree shrews. In general, the distribution pattern of lactoferrin in exocrine tissues of the tree shrew was similar to those of human. In the electron microscopy, lactoferrin wa.s detected in the lysosornes of serous cells. In the eutrophil leukocyte, blood vessels and interstitial tissues, the protein was found in rER, Colgi apparatus and lysosomes. The presence of lactoferrin in the exocrine tissues, which had close relationship with the xtemal.environment, and in the lysosomes might support a morpholiogical function of the lactoferrin as an anti bacteria.id
