Abstract: In Java, g.ogrsphicd dlsMbution of ~ o t t b p l i m twaas broader than that of S aurea This study was conducted to arralyzs morphd&csl diversity and isozymc banding patterns of those two orchid species in Java, using 40 and 2 populations of S. pliNIfn and S. mvea respectively. Morphological data were collected from fk.41 specimens in the field, and leaf orchid isozymes were analyzed using horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Morphological diversity of S m a was less variable than that of S. plicata, as well as their isozymc banding patterns. Based on theii flower morphology, S. plicata populations could be classfied in to 10 different flower groups. Three isozymes, aspartate aminotransferase, endopcptidarc, and acid phosphatase, of S. plicata showed banding pattern variabilities. Clustering method using morphological simitaritv and Euclidian distance measurement of S. olicata mvulations showed the same result with that using isdzyme banding patterns. S. plicata populatiok havingkl same flower morphology will be clustered in om group, even though they wen collected from different locations and differed in their other morphologies. I ~ S&.c ata orchid different flower morphology could have thejr genotype differ. '
