The matrilineal system of the Enggano community highlights women’s crucial roles in environmental conservation, challenging conventional resource management paradigms. This study documents Enggano women’s conservation practices and examines how matrilineal inheritance influences access and control over natural resources. Data were gathered through interviews, participant observation, and literature review, then analyzed using a triangulated approach. Results show that women play key roles in family-based conservation through protecting life-support systems, preserving biodiversity, utilizing natural resource sustainably, and maintaining local ecological knowledge. In Enggano, women have greater access and control to gardens, livestock, food, and medicinal plants, yet their involvement in formal decision-making remains limited under male-dominated traditional leadership. While the matrilineal system strengthens women’s authority in resource use, it does not fully remove gender inequality at the communal level, even when women are actively involved in their maintenance.-
