Gender equality remains a significant social issue in Indonesia. Despite increasing public awareness, data reveal persistently high rates of violence against women, unequal participation in the public sector, and the enduring influence of patriarchal norms governing the division of domestic and public roles. Media, including film, plays a crucial role in shaping these social constructions. This study examines Dua Hati Biru (2024), directed by Gina S. Noer, which narratively and visually presents a progressive depiction of role distribution within the household and professional life, thereby challenging traditional societal stereotypes. The purpose of this research is to analyze the representation of gender equality in Dua Hati Biru through Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, with particular emphasis on the process of demythologization. Barthes’ theory conceives of signs as operating on three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth, the latter often embodying ideologies perceived as “natural” within society. Demythologization is employed to deconstruct and expose these social constructions. This study adopts a qualitative research method using semiotic analysis. Primary data were obtained through repeated observations of the film, while secondary data were derived from literature, previous studies, and in-depth interviews with director Gina S. Noer as well as a viewer who reviewed the film on the social media platform X. The findings indicate that Dua Hati Biru conveys a progressive representation of gender equality. At the denotative level, the film portrays scenes in which the female character (Dara) has the freedom to pursue her career and become the primary breadwinner, while the male character (Bima) assumes significant responsibility for childcare and domestic work. At the connotative level, the film suggests a shift in social values toward a more egalitarian family model, in which roles are not restricted by gender. At the mythical level, the film challenges patriarchal narratives that position men as sole breadwinners and women as homemakers. The process of demythologization becomes evident through visual symbols and narrative elements that subvert traditional gender expectations, such as Bima preparing lunch for Dara or facing stigma for undertaking domestic responsibilities. The analysis of gender equality indicators in the film further demonstrates the fulfillment of four key dimensions: access, participation, control, and benefit. Overall, this study affirms that media, particularly film, can play a vital role in shaping public discourse on gender equality. These findings contribute academically to scholarship in digital communication and media studies, and practically as a reference for filmmakers seeking to create more inclusive and equitable narratives within Indonesia’s film industry. |
