The leading agricultural commodity in the plantation sector is coffee, which serves as the primary source of livelihood for the community in Huta Gurgur Village. Women constitute the majority of the agricultural workforce; however, they continue to face inequality. Women hold a central role in the coffee cultivation process. Gender equality is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study aims to describe the role of women in coffee cultivation, analyze the factors influencing this role, and evaluate its contribution to achieving SDGs 1, 5, and 8. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, with data collected through questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation. The results indicate that women play an important role in coffee cultivation. In addition to engaging in agricultural activities related to coffee cultivation, women also continue to fulfill household responsibilities, reflecting a double burden. Women’s roles in coffee cultivation are influenced by low male involvement, the patriarchal system, the patrilineal system, and the Dalihan Na Tolu principle. Women’s contributions have been shown to support the achievement of SDGs 1, 5, and 8, despite challenges such as wage disparities, extreme poverty, and limited access to training and inheritance. |
