Literacy and numeracy are essential foundational competencies for equipping students to meet the demands of the 21st century. Despite their importance, international assessments consistently report that student achievement in these domains in Indonesia remains relatively low. This underscores the urgency of investigating non-cognitive factors, such as student character, that may significantly contribute to academic performance. This study aims to examine the direct effects of character dimensions including moral character toward nature, the nation, and others; mutual cooperation; creativity; critical thinking; global citizenship; and independence on students’ literacy and numeracy outcomes at the senior high school level in 2023. The analysis employs the Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) approach using secondary data from 33,147 students. Results of the inner model evaluation indicate that independence, creativity, and critical thinking collectively explain 18.1% of the variance in literacy and 10.1% in numeracy. The model demonstrates a good fit, as evidenced by a Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR) value of 0.061. Hypothesis testing reveals that independence and critical thinking exert positive and statistically significant effects on both literacy and numeracy outcomes, while creativity shows a negative significant effect on literacy and no significant effect on numeracy.
