Monitoring the vegetation index in coastal areas is important to understand environmental dynamics and land cover changes, especially in regions such as Ujung Pangkah, Gresik, which are rich in mangrove ecosystems and aquaculture activities. This study aimed to monitor changes in the vegetation index of the Ujung Pangkah coastal area, Gresik, during the period 2013–2022 using Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS satellite imagery. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) algorithm was applied to assess vegetation conditions, and global radiation and Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) data from BMKG were used to examine their relationship with the vegetation index. The results showed that minimum NDVI values ranged from –0.27 to –0.13, while maximum values ranged from 0.45 to 0.54. The average NDVI increased, indicating an improvement in vegetation health and density, particularly in mangrove ecosystems along the coast and the Bengawan Solo estuary. This increase is thought to be influenced by mangrove rehabilitation activities, sediment accretion, and the conversion of fishponds into vegetated areas. The analysis also revealed a positive relationship between PAR and NDVI, indicating that higher photosynthetic radiation promotes vegetation growth. These findings confirm that Landsat 8-based remote sensing can be an effective tool for regularly monitoring coastal land cover changes.
