Spodoptera litura is a polyphagous pest with a wide range of plant hosts which can reduce productivity and cause crop failure. Farmers generally rely on synthetic insecticides such as profenofos, which belong to the organophosphate group for control. Repeated use of the same insecticide active ingredient risks triggering resistance. This study aimed to determine the rate of resistance of S. litura to profenofos and its effect on the fitness of larval development. The methods used included preliminary tests, advanced tests, induction of resistance, and confirmation tests using the leaf dipping technique. The LC50 of the initial population at 24, 48, and 72 hours after treatment (HAT) was 0.086; 0.013; and 0.013 ml/l active ingredient (a.i), respectively, while the final population increased to 1.490; 0.506; and 0.449 ml/l a.i. There was an increase in resistance to profenofos with resistance ratios of 17.33; 38.92; and 39.61 times at 24, 48, and 72 HAT. Profenofos was also shown to reduce the size of instar IV and V larvae by 1.065 times and slow down the development of instar III and instar V larvae by 1.13 times. This study confirms the existence of S. litura resistance to profenofos and the need for wiser control strategies to maintain insecticide effectiveness in the field.
