| Abstract: | The skeletal characteristics of the bornean orangutan (P. pygmaeus), one of the great apes that lives arboreal in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, have not been widely reported. This information is important for studying orangutan
behavior in supporting conservation efforts. This study aims to analyze the anatomical features of the forelimb skeleton of bornean orangutan to understand how the adaptations support their arboreal and locomotion behaviors, especially in
climbing and brachiation. Comparative morphological analysis was conducted using skeletal specimens of bornean orangutans and several other primate species to identify structural adaptations that are typical of arboreal movement. The results showed that orangutans have distinctive characteristics in their forelimbs, such as long bones, flexible joints, strong muscle attachment areas, allowing a wide range of motion to support the ability to explore complex forest canopies. These adaptations not only support the typical arboreal locomotion style, but also contribute significantly to conservation efforts for this endangered species. |
