High-quality automotive air filters are essential to ensure optimal filtration and maintain engine performance. Oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) have potential as an eco-friendly raw material for composite air filter paper, with variations in the arrangement of activated carbon as filler. The highest cellulose content in OPEFB pulp was obtained at the longest cooking time and highest NaOH concentration during the bleaching stage. Increasing PVAc concentration enhanced the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the composite filter paper. Composite filter papers with suspended activated carbon exhibited the largest pore sizes. However, all composite samples still showed much smaller pore sizes compared to the control. The arrangement of activated carbon filler influenced the Gurley porosity, with the lowest values found in samples without activated carbon and those with suspended activated carbon, while laminated activated carbon samples showed the highest porosity values. Overall, none of the composite filter paper samples met industrial air filter standards.
