Dairy cows as the main source of milk production are often infected by bacteria, one of which is Staphylococcus aureus which is a common causative agent of mastitis and the most common bacteria found on dairy farms around the world. This study was aimed to analyze the relationship between somatic cell counts and Staphylococcus aureus counts in milk from dairy farms in West Java. A total of 572 quarter milk samples obtained from dairy farms in the West Java and tested by counting the somatic cell count using Breed method and testing the number of Staphylococcus aureus by plate count method. The results show significant positive relationship (p < 0.05) between somatic cell count and Staphylococcus aureus count with a weak correlation (r= 0.198). Furthermore, this study found that number of Staphylococcus aureus at somatic cell count > 400.000 cells/mL had a significant difference (p < 0.05) compared to somatic cell counts in the range of < 100.000 cells/mL, 100.000–199.999 cells/mL, and 200.000–400.000 cells/mL. The research results showed pattern of Staphylococcus aureus counts in cows milk did not always increase linearly with the range of somatic cell counts, but a significant increase is more pronounced at somatic cell counts > 400.000 cells/mL.
